Galatians 1:6–9 (NKJV)
I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

Sola is a Latin Term Meaning Alone

The Gospel that we preach can be summarized by these five statements: Sola Scriptura: Scripture Alone, Solus Christus: Christ Alone, Sola Fide: Faith Alone, Sola Gratia: Grace Alone, Soli Deo Gloria: For the Glory of God Alone. These five Solas, capture well, the core of the gospel in all its graciousness and Christ-centeredness, just as it is revealed in the Scriptures. These five solas show the glory of God’s gracious way of salvation in a way that sets the tone for true theology, resounding in how we think and live in this world.

Open and Closed Hand Issues

Over the years we have used the terms “open” and “closed” hand when it comes to issues of doctrine. An open hand issue would be one in which we have different perspectives or preferences and still remain united as a church.  A closed hand issue, on the other hand, is a doctrine that we can not and will not compromise on.  These are doctrines, that if not agreed upon, will naturally lead to division amongst the body.

church history

Throughout church history there have been times where it was necessary for believers to publicly declare their beliefs on “closed hand” doctrines, as they watched the church at large, begin to become more open handed in areas that God and His Word do not allow for.

One significant example in church history took place a little over 500 years ago when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Wittenberg Cathedral in defiance of the Roman Catholic Church adding to the One True Gospel.

Much like the Apostle Paul, Luther was arguing against the perversion of the Gospel and arguing for a return to the one and only true Gospel of salvation by grace through faith, nothing more and nothing less.

This August we are going to spend five weeks being reminded of five core truths of the Gospel.  We will see why these truths must remain closed hand issues for the church and all who say they believe in the one true gospel.  We will be looking at what have come to be known as the Five Solas.

“Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures and by clear reason, I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted. My conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen.” - Martin Luther
